60 Metre Hurdle In Train Services Work Mahananda On A War Footing To Repair Suspended Tracks



Workers Carry Boulders To Be Dumped On The Mahananda Riverbed To Restore The Railway Tracks Between Telta And Sudhani Stations In Bihar.Over 6,000 People Are Working Round The Clock In Two Shifts To Repair A 60-Metre Stretch Of Railway Tracks That Is The Only Stumbling Block To Resuming Train Services Between North Bengal And The Rest Of The Country.

The Tracks Between Telta And Sudhani Railway Stations In Bihar Have Been Lying Suspended After The Earth Underneath Was Washed Away By The Overflowing Mahananda On August 11. The Stretch Is Under The Katihar Division Of Northeast Frontier Railway.The Tracks Lying Suspended Lead To A Bridge On The Mahananda.

"There Were Damages To Some Other Railway Stretches Of North Bengal During The Recent Floods. They Have All Been Repaired. But Unless The Tracks Between Telta And Sudhani Are Repaired, Complete Rail Connectivity Between Parts Of North Bengal And The Northeast, And The Rest Of India Cannot Be Restored," Said An NFR Official.He Said The Repair Work On The 60-Metre Stretch Had Been Going On For The Past Seven Days.

"Around 6,000 Labourers Are Working Round The Clock In Two Shifts. Senior NFR Officials, Including Katihar Divisional Railway Manager C.P. Gupta, Are Camping At The Spot," The Official Said.As Of Now, The NFR Has Suspended All Long-Distance Trains Originating From North Bengal And The Northeast Till August 28.

Asked About The Plight Of Passengers And The Circuitous Route Some Are Having To Take Because Of The Suspended Services, The NFR Official Said: "Trains Are Running Till Raiganj And It Has Connectivity With Katihar. A Person Willing To Travel To The Northeast Can Take A Train To Raiganj And Travel To Dalkhola From There By Bus. From Dalkhola, Special Rains Are Running To The Northeast Every Day Via New Jalpaiguri, New Alipurduar And New Cooch Behar Stations."With The Erosion Of The Earth Under The Tracks In The 60-Metre Stretch, The Mahananda Has Virtually Widened In The Area. The Workers Are Dumping Boulders In The River To Level The Tracks With The Banks.

"The Idea Is To Ready At Least One Track At The Earliest So That Train Services Can Resume. The Services Will Have To Be Regulated In The Stretch As Only One Train Can Move At A Time. It Would Take Some Days To Fill The Depression Under Both The Tracks," A Source In The NFR Said.Asked About The Progress Of The Repairs, Gupta Said: "We Are Putting Our Best Efforts To Restore The Tracks At The Earliest."Another Railway Official Sounded Sceptical When Asked If He Hoped At Least One Track Would Be Ready By August 28.

"It Is A Major Damage. Work Is Going On In Full Swing But A Large Tract Needs To Be Filled. Then, The Hanging Tracks Have To Be Fixed, Followed By Inspection And Trial Runs. It Might Take Some More Days Even After August 28 To Get Even One Track Ready," He Said.
