Exclusive As CM Mamata Banerjee Lands In Siliguri,GJM CM Bimal Gurung Addresses Media In Darjeeling

Squashing Speculations Of The Darjeeling Strike Coming To An End Anytime Soon, Chief Of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) Bimal Gurung On Friday Announced That He Would Rather Sacrifice His Life But Will Not Let The Movement Die. Gurung While Talking To The Media And Addressing His Supporters, Said That The Strike Will Not End Anytime Soon.

Gurung, Along With His Party Members Addressed The Media And The People And Reinstated That The Movement They Are Leading Is Not Going To End So Easily, Unless Their Demand Is Met This Time. While They Have Been Continuously Terming The West Bengal Government An Oppressive One And Hence The Demand For A Separate State.

The GJM Which Is Torch-Bearing The Movement In West Bengal’s Darjeeling For A Separate Gorkha State, Gorkhaland, Called For An Indefinite Strike Which Has Disrupted Life In The Otherwise Peaceful Tourist Hub. Gurung Reinstating His Will To See This Movement Achieve Its Goal Said, “This Strike Will Not End Anytime Soon. I Can Give Up My Life But Won’t Let The Movement Die.”

Fresh Demands For A Separate Land Began Earlier This Month After Protestors Staged A Demonstration Outside The Cabinet, As A Session Of The West Bengal Cabinet Was Held In Darjeeling. The Protest Was Against The Government Decision To Make Bengali Compulsory For All Schools From First Standard To Tenth. Although Soon Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Took A Step Back And Said That Schools In Darjeeling Will Be Exempted From This Rule.

However, Soon The Protestors’ Focus Changed From The Language Issue To The Issue Of An Independent State Of Gorkhaland, An Age-Long Demand Of The Gorkhas Residing There. These Protests Soon Transformed Into The GJM Calling For An Indefinite Strike, And The State Government Deploying Paramilitary Forces To Counter These Protestations.

Finally, As Of Now, Business Has Been Hit Severely And There Have Been Incidences Of Violence Where The Protestors Have Been Accused Of Pelting Stones At The Security Forces And Security Forces Have Been Accused Of Countering Them With Violence As Well.

In Such A State, Now The Centre Recently Stated That It Is Ready To Help The State Government To Normalise The Situation. On The Other Hand, Several Hill Parties, And Also The Sikkim Government Has Showed Their Support For The Cause Of A Separate State, Which Has Fueled The Movement Further.

Now The Situation Has Reached The Point Where Both The Parties Involved Have Held Onto Their Stand, With Gurung’s Statement Today And CM Banerjee’s Statement Earlier This Week Where She Said Violence Will Not Be Tolerated And Action Will Be Taken Against Any Such Protest.
